A comfortable night's sleep is a must when camping
When preparing to set off on a camping adventure, it is easy to fall into the trap of only considering the ‘essentials’ like what to eat and what to wear. However, the one thing that can make or break a camping trip is surprisingly easily overlooked - a good night's sleep. When it comes down to it, well-rested campers are happy campers! Here's how to make your bed away from home as comfortable as possible, without the plethora of products!
  • Have the right equipment

Tent Smart
Before you even get to the stage of setting up your campsite, you need to be tent smart. You want to make sure that the tent is roomy enough for everyone to have their personal space, but not so much room that during the cooler seasons air flows between you all like your own personal air-conditioner.

Sleeping Bag Smart
Just like your tent, your sleeping-bag can either make or break a sound night of sleep. Always opt for a high quality sleeping bag that will see you through your trip and ideally many more. Be sure to choose a sleeping bag that suits the climate you are heading to.
  • Be strategic
Now that you're at your campsite and ready to start the lengthy set-up process, it's time to do a lap to find the perfect position for your sleeping quarters. The ideal position is a flat surface, free from rocks and on a soft base like grass or pine needles. If you find that you're on an incline, position your head so that it's above your feet to prevent any late night head rushes. Also consider any trees or shrubs surrounding your tent that might brush against it in the night. Most importantly, have prime positioning for the amenities. We all know that nothing spoils a good sleep, like a late-night trek to the toilets.
  • Prepare your environment
For that extra layer of comfort line, the base of your tent with a blanket or rug for additional cushioning between your bed and the ground.
  • Block out your surroundings
Investing in a pair of earplugs and an eye mask is a good night's rest. You don't want the sounds and sights of the night rendering you sleepless! If you're prone to misplacing things, then a spare pair of earplugs can go a long way, especially if you're after a sleep-in, but the rest of the world isn't.
  • Keep the kids happy
There are a few tactics out there to make tackling bedtime with the kids simpler. Any fears of the dark can be resolved with glow sticks. They're already a camping staple and you're bound to have some on hand, so just string them up around the beds to make for a calmer night's rest. Bring along something from home like pillows or a book that provides a sense of familiarity.
